Kinsley also works with adolescents and young people, we tailor this to the individual and some teenagers may not like to do the creative side, others will, therefore we can use a combination of talking and creative therapies to suit the needs of your young person, please see integrative therapy).
Therapeutic play based therapy is also very helpful if your child has behavioural challenges and trouble managing their anger. Therapeutic play based counselling is a safe environment where they can learn new skills and express themselves without judgement. Kinsley uses both child led and directive methods.
Please reach us at Enquiries@happyparentandchildinitiative.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
The reason for this is due to the different modes of training and theories used. Kinsley is trained in Integrative Counselling. She is registered with the British association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and is trained in counselling theories, such as psychodynamic, CBT, Person-centred, Gestalt and Jungian theories. She then went on to train in creative arts and therapeutic play techniques with children. Kinsley uses the SPICC model for delivering her therapy to children using child-led and directive techniques based on the previously mentioned counselling theories. This gives Kinsley the added title of therapeutic play and creative arts (Practitioner or Child Counsellor).
The name ‘Play Therapist and Play Therapy’ are protected titles used by the BAPT and PTUK. Play therapists are trained in play therapy theories like Adlerian. This uses different underpinnings on how the therapy is carried out. Kinsley is starting her training in October to become a certified ‘play therapist’ registered with PTUK and hopes to complete this within the next few years. However, Kinsley is still fully qualified with the BACP to work with children from as young as 4 years old, using creative arts and therapeutic play and will continue to do so under the BACP.
Therapeutic Play and Creative Arts therapy can be helpful for children who have experienced a range of emotional, developmental and behavioural difficulties in their lives. Difficult life experiences can cause anxiety, stress and confusion. Such experiences are likely to impact a child’s enjoyment of life, and their capacity to learn and think. Children may withdraw, struggle with relationships, display challenging behaviour, find it difficult to concentrate or become more controlling.
It varies. The minimum is 6-12 sessions, which may be enough for some children.
However, in instances where problems are more complex or if the needs are greater, a greater number of sessions may be required. Sessions are regular and consistent, usually once a week or fortnightly, usually at the same time and place – something which helps build trust in the relationship. Missing sessions can disrupt the intervention’s progress.
A session lasts anywhere between 30-45 minutes, this depends on your child.
For children, creative art and play therapy offer numerous benefits that can support their emotional, social, cognitive, and behavioral development. Some of these benefits include:
**Emotional Expression**: Children often find it challenging to express their emotions verbally. Creative art and play therapy provide them with alternative outlets for expressing their feelings, helping them to identify, process, and communicate emotions in a safe and non-threatening environment.
**Self-Exploration and Identity Development**: Through engaging in various creative activities and play experiences, children can explore different aspects of themselves, including their likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. This self-exploration contributes to their identity development and fosters a sense of self-awareness.
**Enhanced Communication Skills**: Participating in creative art and play activities encourages children to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through non-verbal means. This can help improve their communication skills, including the ability to express themselves effectively and understand the perspectives of others.
**Cognitive Development**: Engaging in creative activities and imaginative play stimulates children's cognitive development. It encourages problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills as they experiment with different materials, techniques, and scenarios.
**Social Interaction and Relationship Building**: Creative art and play therapy often involve group settings, providing children with opportunities for social interaction, collaboration, and relationship building. Through shared creative experiences, children learn to cooperate, negotiate, and empathize with others.
**Stress Reduction and Emotional Regulation**: Creative activities and play can serve as a form of stress relief for children, helping them to relax and unwind. Engaging in these activities also teaches children coping strategies for managing difficult emotions and regulating their emotional responses.
**Boosted Self-Esteem and Confidence**: Successfully completing creative projects and participating in imaginative play activities can boost children's self-esteem and confidence. It provides them with a sense of accomplishment and validation for their efforts, fostering a positive self-image.
**Trauma Processing and Healing**: For children who have experienced trauma or adversity, creative art and play therapy can be instrumental in processing and healing from their experiences. These therapeutic approaches offer a safe space for children to express and work through their emotions, facilitating the healing process.
**Empowerment and Autonomy**: Engaging in creative activities and play allows children to exercise autonomy and make choices about their experiences. This sense of empowerment can be empowering for children, promoting independence, and self-reliance.
**Integration of Sensory Experiences**: Creative art and play therapy often involve sensory experiences, such as tactile exploration, visual stimulation, and auditory engagement. These multisensory experiences promote sensory integration, enhancing children's sensory processing abilities.
Overall, creative art and play therapy provide children with a holistic approach to emotional and psychological well-being, fostering creativity, self-expression, and personal growth in a supportive and nurturing environment.
