Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) is a type of psychotherapy which uses dance and movement to promote physical, emotional and mental well-being. Movement is a language and is our first language. Nonverbal and movement communication begins at a young age and continues throughout our lifespan. Nonverbal language is just as important as verbal language and DMP provides a space to be able to use both forms of communication in the therapeutic process.
DMP centres its interventions on the mind and body being connected and that being able to engage in movement can improve mental health and well-being. DMP is commonly used to treat physical, psychological, cognitive and social issues such as:
• ADHD, • Aggression• Anxiety, • Autism, • Depression, • Disordered Eating, • Learning Disabilities • Low Self-Esteem,• OCD• Post-traumatic stress• Social Interaction
DMP can be used with a range of client groups and in general promotes self-awareness, self-esteem and a safe space for the expression of feelings.
DMP is useful for individuals that find it difficult to communicate how they are feeling through words, as dance movement therapists will observe, assess and intervene by looking at movement which can encourage a positive way of connecting with your non-verbal language to promote self-awareness and understanding of emotions.
